Wildlife You  May See

Southeast Alaska is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Along with humpback whales, guests may see sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, porpoises, and even the chance to spot orcas that transit the area throughout the summer. Other wildlife you may see might include brown and black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, ravens, and bald eagles.

Even after many years on the water, we still feel the same excitement every time a whale surfaces or an eagle soars overhead. Sharing these moments with our guests is what makes every tour special.

Eco-Friendly

Protecting the Waters We Love

At Catch of the Day, protecting Alaska’s marine life is central to our work. We follow all federal whale watching guidelines to keep a respectful distance from wildlife while still providing an incredible viewing experience. By reducing our environmental footprint and supporting local conservation efforts, we help ensure that Alaska’s whales, eagles, and marine ecosystems thrive for generations to come.

Our eco-friendly whale-watching tours in Hoonah, Alaska, are designed to showcase the beauty of Icy Strait Point responsibly, offering guests a chance to experience the wonder of the ocean without disturbing its balance.

Responsible Travel

We proudly support programs that protect Alaska’s coastal habitats and wildlife. From using fuel-efficient engines to reducing single-use plastics onboard, every decision we make reflects our responsibility to the sea.

Educating Guests

We believe every tour is a chance to inspire awareness. During each trip, our crew shares stories and insights about whale behavior, marine ecosystems, and local conservation. Guests leave with a deeper understanding of how fragile and extraordinary this environment truly is.

Community Involvement

Founded in Hoonah and locally staffed, we’re committed to operating responsibly and supporting the community. We focus on sustainable tourism practices and work closely with residents to ensure our tours respect the culture, wildlife, and waters of Southeast Alaska.

Our Journey

From Hawaii to Hoonah

Captain Dennis first started guiding tours in Alaska over 30 years ago. His work on the Nā Pali Coast of Kauai gave him a deep understanding of whales and marine ecosystems that he continues to share today. Now based full time in Hoonah, Dennis and Crystal lead every trip with the same excitement they felt when they first started — because even after all these years, seeing a whale breach beside the boat never gets old.

When you join a Catch of the Day tour, you’re not just booking a trip — you’re sharing a lifetime of experience, passion, and respect for the sea.
